Are You a Tortoise or a Hare When It Comes to Fitness? Get Fit Now Training Course
Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at 11:10PM When it comes to starting a new health and fitness journey, I always ask people one simple question: Are you a tortoise or a hare?
We all want quick results. When you decide it's time to get in shape, jumping headfirst into a strict diet and an intense workout program sounds like a fantastic idea. That’s the "Hare" approach.
The Hare: Sprinting to Burnout
The Hare approach usually leads to an amazing start. You drop a few pounds quickly and feel highly motivated, but often, it results in a terrible finish. People burn out quickly because extreme lifestyle changes simply aren't sustainable for most of us.
Even if you do manage to sprint your way to your health and fitness goal, you rarely stay there. Because you haven't built foundational habits you can comfortably maintain, the rebound can be horrible, leaving you right back where you started (or worse).
The Tortoise: The Step-by-Step Method
Now, let's look at the "Tortoise" approach. For people starting from scratch, or starting over for the tenth time, I highly suggest a step-by-step method. Slow and steady wins the race.
Instead of trying to overhaul your entire life on a Monday morning, try this gradual progression:
-
Step 1: Better Beverages. Start simple by making better drink choices. Consume less sugar, less alcohol, and drink more water.
-
Step 2: Get Moving. Start walking a little bit every day, slowly increasing your distance and speed over time.
-
Step 3: Dial in the Food. Once you have control over your beverages and are moving daily, move on to eating proportional, balanced meals.
-
Step 4: Ramp Up the Intensity. Finally, ramp up your exercise by adding in weight training or whatever physical activity you actually enjoy.
Why Ramping Up Works
Why does this step-by-step approach work so much better than the all-or-nothing sprint? Because ramping things up over time isn't jarring to your lifestyle. It prevents you from feeling overwhelmed right out of the gate.
If you go too fast and eventually have to scale your efforts back because you are exhausted, it psychologically feels like a failure. But when you start small and scale up, every new step feels like a massive win! You can always increase your intensity once you've built a solid, comfortable foundation.
Find Your Balance
There’s really no wrong answer between the tortoise and the hare, but finding that happy, sustainable balance with eating, exercise, and consistency is the absolute key. Once you find it, you have your program in place for life.
